Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. The higher the zinc content in brass, the higher its strength and slightly lower plasticity. The zinc content of brass used in the industry does not exceed 45%. No matter how high the zinc content is, it will cause brittleness and deteriorate the performance of the alloy. Brass added with other alloying elements based on unary brass is called special brass. Commonly used alloying elements are silicon, aluminum, tin, lead, manganese, iron, and nickel. Adding aluminum to brass can improve brass’s yield strength and corrosion resistance and slightly reduce plasticity. Brass containing less than 4% aluminum has good comprehensive properties such as processing and casting. Adding 1% tin to brass can significantly improve their ability to resist seawater and marine atmospheric corrosion, called “Navy Brass.” Tin also improves the machinability of brass. The main purpose of adding lead to brass is to improve machinability and wear resistance, and lead has little effect on the strength of brass. Manganese brass has good mechanical properties, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance; adding aluminum to manganese brass can also improve its performance and obtain castings with smooth surfaces. Brass can be divided into casting and pressure processing, two types of products.
Different zinc content will also have different colors. For example, if the zinc content is 18%-20%, it will be red-yellow, and if the zinc content is 20%-30%, it will be brown-yellow. Can you braze aluminum with brass rod?
Copper and aluminum can be welded by fusion welding, pressure welding, and brazing. However, due to the good plasticity of copper and aluminum, the compression rate of copper is 80%~90%, and that of aluminum is 60%~80%. Therefore, the pressure welding method is mainly used for welding at present. The main difficulty of fusion welding is that the melting points of aluminum and copper are very different.
